Wolves are probably the most misunderstood of the wild animals. In today's day and age, they are feared and thought of as man-eating beasts. Tales of cold bloodedness abound, in spite of the their friendly, social and intelligent traits. In Native American teachings, however, they are regarded very highly.
Wolves are looked upon as teachers or pathfinders in the Native American culture. They represent a skilled hunter; not for their savage nature or carnivorous eating habits, but because of their wisdom. The wolf is characterized by its possession of loyalty and independence, as well as it's protectiveness and knowledge. Wolves are fiercely loyal to their mates, and have a strong sense of family while maintaining individualism. They are truly free spirits even though their packs are highly organized. Just like Native American storytelling, wolf packs pass knowledge, wisdom and skill down through watching and learning from elders.
In the stars, Wolf is represented by the Dog, Sirius, thought by many abroginal tribes to be the home of the "Ancients." It seems to be through this connection that Wolf has come to be associated with ancient teachings. Traditionally, someone with Wolf Medicine has a strong sense of self, and communicates well through subtle changes in voice inflection and body movements. They often find new solutions to problems while providing stability and support that one normally associates with a family structure.
