Route 66 was first established into the US highway system on November 11, 1926. Route 66 stretched from Chicago, Illinois to Los Angeles, California and took you through the states of Missouri, Kansas, Texas, Oklahoma, Arizona and New Mexico to cover a distance of 2,448 miles. Route 66 underwent many changes in its original route to either bypass the congestion of major cities or to give travelers a safer/faster route, even its ending point was changed from Los Angeles to Santa Monica. Route 66 is also known as Will Rogers Highway, Main Street of America and the Mother Road. There has been a song about it a TV series, a company, clothing line, race track and recording label all bearing the name Route 66. The 2001 Pixar - Disney Movie Cars even takes place on it.
The beginning of the end of the famous route came to pass when President Eisenhower signed the Interstate Highway Act in 1956. It was a famous route that memories where made on until sadly its decommission in June 27, 1985. Then again its popularity has been on the rise with states reissuing it signs that state Historic Route 66, it is even starting to pop back up on some maps.
