Unicorn Belt Buckle
In most cultures the unicorn is considered a mythical creature. However some cultures speak of it as if it is real. Unicorns are not found in Greek mythology, but rather in accounts of natural history, for Greek writers of natural history were convinced of the reality of the unicorn, which they located in India, a distant and fabulous realm for them. Medieval knowledge of the fabulous beast stemmed from biblical and ancient sources, and the creature was variously represented as a kind of wild ass, goat, or horse.
The horn of the unicorn was said to possess great powers. Different cultures assigned various strengths to it.
There are several coins in existence that seem to portray a unicorn. Or maybe it is simply the profile of another beast. Who knows. What do you think?
According to legend a unicorn was only tamable by a virgin women. Virgin women were also used in legend to bait and trap the unicorn. In one of his notebooks Leonardo da Vinci wrote:
"The unicorn, through its intemperance and not knowing how to control itself, for the love it bears to fair maidens forgets its ferocity and wildness; and laying aside all fear it will go up to a seated damsel and go to sleep in her lap, and thus the hunters take it.”
